The Art of Boat Names: Inspiring Ideas for Names and Designs
McGraw-Hill/International Marine, December 2008
I researched, wrote and designed The Art of Boat Names to present a genre of vernacular typography
previously undocumented. Opening with a history of boat naming, it chronicles a novel form of
contemporary personal branding and situates it within the larger context of hand-lettering, digital and do-it-
yourself typography. It also includes stories on the dying crafts of sign painting and hand carving through
interviews with artists and craftspeople. Written primarily for boaters, the book contributes to the education
of an amateur audience of design producers/consumers by introducing them to the elements and principles
of design and typography.
